Race Report 16/06

Ciclos Uno North Weald evening series had the largest entry so far this year, riders were greeted with another dry but windy night. Three handicap groups were set off with fast  riders being just over half a lap down on the main group and the Over 60's starting last an early Prime saw the main group start slowly and then sprint at the end of the lap. On the other side of the circuit the fast group were working well together and closed the gap to the leaders fairly quickly. After a brief lull in action a group of four broke away (James Jackson, Ben Davey Andu Saunders and Craig Stevens) they were chased by three others (Graham Galvin, Kier Apperly, Leigh Haigh and visitor from Australia Gary Howith). The bunch kept the leaders within sight for a number of laps but were unable to close the gap, eventually the elastic broke and the leaders pulled away by 30 seconds.. The two front groups joined forces for the remaining six laps.the sprint for the finish was easily won by James Jackson but the next four places were fairly tightly contested. The Over 60's group stayed together as a bunch throughout the race and ended in a sprint in which Terry Devine edged out Chris Broadway and Colin Manakee .

Race Five - 2nd June

Another good evening of handicap racing with just over 50 riders signing on. Thankfully we did not have the strong winds of the previous few weeks although the airfield circuit is very rarely still. The scratch group consisted of about a dozens riders who all shared the load to claw back the handicap on the main group. A few attempts were made to break away from the group but by the time the scratch group caught them the main bunch was altogether. Following a lap ridden all together Mark Porter and Craig Stevens forced a narrow advantage with about six laps remaining. Female triathlete and upcoming road rider Nicki Juniper managed to tag along for a couple of laps and showed her strength and ability. She only lost contact when Dominic Schills and Martin Meades joined the leaders and the pace went up a notch. The quartet of leaders worked well over the closing three laps. Dominic Schills showing his class and ability rode away from the other with a lap remaining to tale another well deserved win.

Race Report - May 22nd

Another windy evening greeted riders although it was pleasantly warm and sunny.53 riders signed on and were split into three groups for the handicap race. Strongest riders started first , this group contained a mix of age groups ranging from F category Vet (Tony Woodcock) down to couple of very promising Juniors. Next to start were the Over sixties and novice riders, the last group to start were the Intermediate group who effectively had about 3/4 lap advantage on the fast group. With a strong wind blowing down the back straight it was extremely fast but compensated by a full head wind up to the finish and top turn.  Speed and wind combined to limit the success of solo and small group breaks. The fast group caught the intermediate group with four laps remaining and the speed then started to increase which brought about a split in the bunch as the weaker riders faded away. Dominic Schils, David Nichols and James Jackson all tried lone attacks but were never able to establish a gap over the bunch and so it came down to a bunch gallop to decide placing. James Jackson took the sprint fairly easily with the minor placings being much closer, the full head wind sprint split the finishers up making judging a relatively easy task this week. The Over 60's bunch stayed mainly together until the final lap  with Colin Manakee showing a clean pair of heels to his compatriots.

Secretary's Report to 2008 AGM

Memberships

As a region we are in quite a healthy situation we have approximately 170 members and run 20 closed circuit events.

On the downside all twenty events were midweek evening races run by Trevor Maddern and myself, with 16 at North Weald Aerodrome and 4 late season events at the new Hog Hill circuit.

From a Membership secretary point of view I was able to issue licence’s either on the night as riders completed the form or by the next day. Obviously there was an initial influx just before the first race however I sent out a membership Application form to all last years members a month or two before the first races. Human nature being what it is I don’t think many people would renew in January if there are no races in the region until May.

Treasurer

A healthy income and Bank balance gives us flexibility. We are in a position to under-write possible losses incurred if an event gets washed out by the weather (North Weald Aerodrome still charge us even if there is no racing and its very expensive). This in turn allowed the organisers to offer prizes in the events  / series.

I have also been able to offer a subsidy to a future organiser.

Other Duties

Unfortunately I do not have the time to drum up additional organisers and beat the TLI drum. I am sure we could persuade more clubs to organise under our umbrella if someone had the time and inclination to get in touch with them. Sadly very few people willingly want to get involved and prefer to leave it to others  - or take the easy BC / LVRC route.

I will try to persuade others in the region to pick up this role.

International Racing Secretary

I feel rather a fraud with this title I have actually done very little on this front – possibly I misunderstood the role & responsibilities.

Nearly all the communication I had in this role came via John Bethell and no riders contacted me with regards to International Racing. However I did publicise the Worlds etc at  the North Weald events but as far as I am aware the only local riders that went over there did so under their own steam or as part of an LVRC group.
