The start of the concluding cycle race of the new North Midlands Road Race League’s Saturday Series was met by torrential rain and windy conditions. This caused the race to be reduced from 5 to 4 laps of the undulating 7.5 mile Cuckney course in North Nottinghamshire. Overall Leader, Simon Cocker (TLI) was a non-starter, but with his only challenger Simon Keeton (Rutland CC) also absent due to illness, this meant the first Saturday League title was already decided regardless of the outcome of the day's race. The field was split into 2 groups with a 4 minute handicap for the scratch riders group to make up. A minor collision between riders in the long markers group caused disruption on their opening lap which enabled the scratch group to catch them towards the end of the first lap. From that point on a strong pace was set which made it difficult for any breakaways to gain any significant advantage. In the closing stages of the race, Andy Bishop (TLI) attacked and having opened up a small gap, looked poised for victory only to misjudge a corner whilst looking behind to check his advantage and crashed out. At the line, local rider Mat Barker-Quick (Harworth & District CC) won the sprint ahead of junior, Tom Sutton (Sheffield Phoenix CC), with Ian Davenport (Dinnington RC/Universal Cycle Centre) in 3rd place. All the rest of the bunch were given the same time as the winner; 1 hr 17 mins 47 secs for 30 miles, an average speed of 23mph in difficult conditions.

Overall winner after 6 races was Cocker with 25 points. By his latest win Barker-Quick gained 10 points to increase his total to 24 points, just a single point behind Cocker, and overtake Simon Keeton who was in 3rd place with 23 points. A total of 74 riders entered at least one event in the six race series. Their ages ranged from 15 to 82! They came from as far afield as Halifax, York, Newark and Spalding to compete with locals from South Yorkshire, North Notts, North Derbyshire.

Peter Dungworth (Saturday Series Promoter) said “The six additional races in the new Saturday Series provided much appreciated extra competition for the riders on a tough 7.5 mile undulating course between Cuckney, Budby and Carburton and was guaranteed to produce a worthy winner. It was a very close finish to the overall standings with only two points between the first three riders.”

New Leader in Cycle Race League

The fifth race of the new NMRRL Saturday Series was met by dry, windy conditions which made for a difficult race for the riders. The field was split into 2 groups with a 6 minute gap for the scratch riders to make up. Both groups worked well with plenty of effort from all riders and the longmarker group looked to be holding the scratch group at bay, losing only a minute a lap for the opening 3 laps. Thus they still held a 3 minute lead with just 2 laps to go and looked on course to stay away. However, a slower penultimate lap with the scratch group maintaining their effort reduced the lead to 1 minute 25 seconds at the bell. With the scratch group getting ever closer as the race neared its conclusion, the longmarkers made one last effort with the result that the junction was only made as the field entered the finishing straight with the sprint already having begun. At the line, Alex Mitchell (Sheffrec CC) was a clear winner ahead of Alan Hamshaw (Dinnington RC) with Mat Barker-Quick (Harworth & District CC) in 3rd place. Andrew Wasteney (Beighton Wheelers) was the best of the scratch riders in 7th place. Simon Cocker (TLI) managed 8th place to take over the lead in the Overall Standings with one race remaining.

Peter Dungworth (Promoter) said “This latest race in the new North Mids Saturday Road Race League was perfectly handicapped by Martin Ellis making it a very challenging event. The scratch group just caught the longmarkers group on the line but couldn’t get through to the front. In what was a blanket finish all riders were given the same time for completing the 36.5 miles at an average speed of 23 mph.”

The next and final event in the series is on Saturday 14th August at Cuckney. For further details see www.nmrrl.org.uk or email peter@bradway.co.uk

Cycle Racing Returns to the Peak

After a gap of almost a decade, massed start cycle racing returned to Derbyshire’s High Peak roads on Sunday 27th June for a 6 lap race over a 7 mile circuit around the beautiful Peak District villages of Chelmorton, Flagg and Monyash.

Local riders from Buxton and Matlock were joined by competitors from as far away as Manchester, Macclesfield, Stafford, Nottinghamshire, York, and all over South Yorks.

Riders set off in three groups, handicapped according to age and ability, with 6 minutes between each group. On the second lap Ian Dutton (TLI - Altringham) and local rider Pete Middleton (Zepnat - Buxton) broke away from the front group to develop a significant lead. Similarly Simon Keeton (Rutland CC), James Thompson and Dan Storey (both Sheffrec CC) also attacked from the fastest scratch group in an attempt to reduce their handicap.

Ian Dutton managed to stay away to win the 42 mile event by a mere 3 seconds in a time of 1 hour 51 minutes and 53 seconds, an average speed of 23 mph. Dan Storey’s strong ride pulled back a 12 minute handicap from scratch group to take second place. Pete Middleton was third.

Event organiser, Peter Dungworth, said: “Riders, spectators and local residents alike hailed the race a great success. The tough High Peak country roads ensured a worthy winner. It is hoped that the success of this first race will enable others to be promoted around the Peak District’s beautiful National Park.”

The event was jointly promoted by Sharrow CC, Whirlow Wheelers CC and Sheffrec CC in response to the nationwide increase in the popularity of cycling in the North Midlands area and is part of TLI Cycling’s calendar of cycle races.

Saturday Series - Event Four

In the fourth race of the new NMRRL Saturday Series the riders were split into 2 groups handicapped according to age / ability. The scratch group started six and a half minutes behind the longmarker and both groups worked hard throughout the race. The gap gradually reduced each lap and with one 7.5 mile lap to go, the longmarkers had 1 minute 20 seconds lead which meant it was touch and go whether they would be caught.

Within the final mile, Simon Keeton & Marc Mallender (both Rutland CC) put in a huge effort to jump across the gap and onto the back of the longmarkers just as the race entered the final finishing straight, but it was just too late as, helped by a strong backwind, Simon Cocker (TLI) took the sprint from Ian Russell (Newark Castle CC) with Keeton taking 3rd place. The result means that with only two more races to go both Keeton & Cocker are now tied for the overall lead in the Saturday League.

Peter Dungworth (Promoter) said “This latest race was the most competitive in the new North Mids Saturday Road Race League. In a blanket finish all riders were given the same time for completing the 36.5 miles at an average speed of 23 mph.”

The next event is on Saturday 17th July at Cuckney.

NMRRL Saturday Results

Event Two
It was a good race in brilliant conditions. 41 started compared with 32 at the first event. Whilst it is an increase in the numbers it is still disappointing. The low number of riders also means a low number of marshals. Whether the Saturday League is viable is questionable. None of the lads from Doncaster have entered preferring to go out on their Saturday afternoon chaingang!

In the race the scratch group failed to catch the other two groups which had merged about half way through. The provisional result is:

1    Simon Cocker   (TLI private member)
2    A Dawson        (Wilson cycles)
3    Dan Panichella  (Sheffield Sports)
4    C Sinclair         (TLI private member)
5    Dave Webster   (Rutland)
6    Mark Robinson   (Spalding CC)
7    Paul Sleaford    (Norton)
8    Chris Lynch      (Sheffrec)
9    A Bishop          (TLI private member)
10  John Hind         (Sheff Phoenix)

Event One

The first event of the new North Midlands Road Racing League’s Saturday Series attracted 45 riders from South Yorkshire, North Notts, North Derbyshire and as far afield as Halifax, York, and Spalding.

The race was 5 laps of a 7.5 mile undulating course in Nottinghamshire between Cuckney, Budby and Carburton, a total distance of 36.5 miles. The riders were handicapped into 3 groups according to age and ability. For the first two laps the handicaps worked well with all three groups on course to finish together. The 24 miles per hour pace set by the scratch (last) group was so fast that several good riders were dropped. By the third lap an increasingly strong wind took its toll and with 10 miles to go the scratch group caught the middle-markers. As the riders started their last lap the long-markers (front) group were still 1 minute ahead of the chasing pack. As the race was coming together and with only about 4 miles to go James Baillie (Sheffield Sports CC) attacked taking 3 other strong riders with him. They worked well together and stayed away until the finish.

The winner was Sean Smith (VS Cycles), at an average speed of 24 mph, and who now leads the League overall. Second was Sheffield veteran Simon (“Squeaker”) Keeton (Rutland C C). Third was James Baillie, a 16 year old who is maturing into a strong rider. Sheffield’ Mark Mallender (Rutland CC) was fourth. 26 seconds back in fifth place was Jack Allison (Dronfield Fusion CC), a16 year old riding his first ever road race. Marc Etches (Sheffrec C C) won the bunch sprint for 7th place which included well known local veteran and former Tour de France rider Pete Ryalls (Sheffield Phoenix C C).

Saturday series promoter, Peter Dungworth said “This is an encouraging start to the new Saturday series which, it is hoped will become as popular as its sister Thursday evening series, now in its 31st year of competition. Previous winners of the Thursday series include Malcolm Elliott, who rode the Tour de France and is the only English rider ever to win a vest in one of the three major tours“.

The Saturday series next race is on 24th April. For further details including how to enter see www.nmrrl.org.uk or email peter@bradway.co.uk

This new cycle racing league was started in response to the nationwide increase in the popularity of cycling. There will be six races held on Saturday afternoons at 4 weekly intervals from March through to August. Peter Dungworth, who is promoting the Saturday afternoon league, said: “These additional races will not only provide extra competition for the riders but also a free and fast moving spectacle for the spectators and local residents.”

This Saturday Cycle Race League will be run on a similar basis to the very successful Thursday evening North Midlands Road Racing league and is part of TLI Cycling’s 2010 calendar of events.

Last year the North Midlands Road Race League celebrated its 31st anniversary. Previous winners include numerous national champions such as Malcolm Elliott from Sheffield, who rode the Tour de France and Tour of Spain, is still the only English rider to win a jersey in any of the three major tours; Chris Walker won the Milk Race and Tour of Britain. Winners from Rotherham include multi national champions and brothers Dean and Russell Downing. Russell won last year’s Tour of Ireland beating riders such as Lance Armstrong (Astana) and Mark Cavendish (Team Columbia). Adam Blythe from Dronfield, then aged only 15, is the youngest rider ever to win the league outright. Adam, now aged 20, has spent the last two years racing in Belgium and this year became a member of the Omega Pharmaceutical / Lotto’s professional racing team that competes in such races as the Tours of France, Italy and Spain. Another former NMRRL young rider is Ben Swift who last year rode his first Tour of Italy and this year is riding with Russell for the Sky British Cycling professional racing team. Russell recently won his first road race for the Sky Team.

The Thursday evening league is so popular that the program for each of its 18 weekly races held between April and August will list over 130 riders from South Yorkshire, North Notts, North Derbyshire and beyond. The 18 races will be on three different courses at Torworth, Harworth, and Maltby with 6 races on each. Riders are aged from 15 to 60+years. Peter Ryalls from Dronfield who rode the Tour de France in 1961 has been a regular rider and is still going strongly. Overall winner of last year’s league was Ashley Proctor (riding for Sheffrec Cycling Club). He is only the second rider aged under 16 ever to have won the league.
