Secretary's Report to the AGM 2009
Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to make this another great season in the North West and Isle of Man.
During the year there have been 48 events, 19 in the NW and 29 on the IoM.
These can be broken down in each area within the Region as follows: -
· NW – 18 road / circuit races, and a Ten Mile sporting course District TT Championship.
We are pleased to have been able to support the continuation of the Seighford Circuit races, with its focus on younger riders.
· IoM – 17 road / circuit races and 11 time trials including a 2 up and a 3 up team time trial, a 37 mile mountain time trial and a hill climb. This despite ongoing issues with road works which necessitated several changes of course. Once again we have been delighted to support the very successful and popular MTB “End to End” Challenge.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, a couple of events were either cancelled or rearranged.
The Race Organisers, together with some new recruits, all supported by an army of club and family helpers, have made this year’s programme of racing possible.
Once again, on behalf of everyone who has competed this year, I would like to offer a massive vote of thanks to those who have put in the time and effort to enable the competitors to enjoy a wide variety of events. One or two organisers may wish to take a break this year, (A big “Thank you” to Martyn Shaw of Stone Wheelers), so be prepared to fill the gaps and if possible increase the programme. If your club has a lot of competitors and no promotions, how about giving Road Race organising a go?
Despite the cancellation of British Cycling’s Mersey 2 Day in March 2009, throughout the Region, we continue to enjoy excellent relationships with Police, both on the NW Mainland and the Isle of Man.
We are very grateful to our National Secretary Richard Lang, and his colleagues in the Cymru Region, for promoting TLI cycling as a professional cycling organisation, by demonstrating to the local Police force that we are competent and safe event promoters. At the time of writing we are the only cycling organisation in N Wales allowed to promote races without the imposition of special conditions.
Please take every opportunity to upheld our excellent reputation as excellent organisers and safe competitors by expressing appreciation to Officers of the respective Police forces, whenever the opportunity arises.
In general the standard and quality of riding in the regions events continues to be high, and everyone, whether they are a competitor, marshal or organiser is to be congratulated for that. Further congratulations to all our region’s members who have enjoyed local and national success this year, not only in TLI cycling events but also in those organised by the LVRC and BC.
During the year, thanks to the computer skills of Geoff Readman, we have continued to maintain an interactive database of the region’s members. We also experimented with an automated e mail system in January, to remind members to rejoin. I think the record for multiple e mails was around 200 to the same recipient! Sincere apologies to anyone we inadvertently inconvenienced.
This year there are 338 members in the NW & IoM region, 19 up on 2008. I believe this to be the most ever.
Of our 338 members, 103 are based on the IoM. With the remainder largely from Cheshire, Staffordshire, Merseyside and the Greater Manchester areas.
Members belong to around 69 cycling clubs and sponsored teams. The top three on the Isle of Man are, Manx Road Club with 34, followed by Manx Viking Wheelers with 33, Ellan Vannin with 21 and the Manx Mountain Bike Club with 13.
On the mainland, where there are a greater number of clubs, a new entry at Number One is Weaver Valley CC with 17 members, followed by Macclesfield Wheelers and Manchester Wheelers (a new entry!) with 14 each. Liverpool Mercury, Warrington RC, the Seamons CC and Birkenhead NE fill the next four places, all with 10 or more members. Does any club with lots of members, not already organising an event for TLI cycling or the LVRC, fancy promoting in 2010? There is space on the calendar. Contact me for details, address below.
This year Unattached Members have increased to 20. If you are one of them please make every effort to support a local club next season, especially if you have not previously done so. The experience of Sunday Club rides often makes you a far safer competitor.
The age structure of the Region’s membership in 2009 was as follows: -

A new venture this Autumn was the NW Mainland Organisers’ meeting. A well attended event at The Crown in Goostrey. As a result of this meeting and similar efforts on the Isle of Man, the provisional programme for 2010 will soon be available on the website.
